Chinese morphemes are integrated with syllables and
Chinese characters. As the smallest grammatical unit, they are also the minimum
combination of sound, form, and meaning, with flexible usage. Morphemes serve
as a fundamental link in grammar, character, vocabulary, and even cultural
teaching. The teaching and acquisition of key morphemes require both
identifying common features by category and mastering them one by one. This
book explains morphemes at two levels: monosyllabic morphemes as independent
words and polysyllabic word formation through morpheme combination. It defines
morphemes, describes their usage, identifies common errors, and makes clear
distinctions in an accessible way. It places special emphasis on cultivating
learners’ morpheme awareness, aiming to connect listening, reading and writing,
and comprehensively improve learners’ Chinese proficiency.
